How to Support a Loved One Going through Divorce

Here at Divorce Attorneys San Jose CA, we know how stressful divorce can be. If you have a friend going through a divorce, here are 5 things that you can do for them to offer support during this difficult time in their lives.

Be a Good Listener

One of the primary and simplest things that you can do for your friend is just listen to them.

Acknowledge the Difficulty

It will help your friend immensely to just have someone acknowledge the difficulty that they are going through. In a lot of ways, a divorce is like experiencing the death of a loved one. A relationship that had previously been there is gone now. Don’t minimize the situation or make your friend feel like they are overreacting. That’s not your call to make.

Help When You Can

If your friend was used to something in their marriage, such as their spouse making dinners, one thing you can do is try to fill in and help where the pieces are missing.

Don’t Push Them

Never push your friend to do something if they are not ready for it. This includes getting back into the dating game. Your friend will move on when they feel good about it and you need to support them.

Avoid Saying the Wrong Things

When your friend is going through a divorce, avoid saying things like “You need to move on,” and “There are plenty of fish in the sea.” Your friend knows these things and has probably heard them before. Be helpful and supportive and avoid giving advice when it’s not asked for.
